The curtain rises in March as talented young women vie for the title and crown of Miss Millard County. Pageant directors and committee members help the contestants prepare for the competition weeks in advance with various workshops and practices to help the girls learn how to best showcase their personalities, talents, speaking skills, and poise which help qualify them to serve as ambassadors for Millard County.
Miss Millard County 2009 is Tara Lemon. She is the Daughter of Wade and Madean Lemon of Holden. She is attending Utah State University. Tara is an advocate on preventing distracted driving, having lost several friends to automobile accidents. Tara is teaching skills to help drivers realize the dangers they put themselves and others in if they are distracted while driving.
Tara will participate in and make appearances at many county events, parades, and festivals, including The Old Capitol Arts Festival, Delta's Tree Festival and light parade, Oak City Days, and reigning over the Millard County Fair to name a few. Tara will compete in the 2010 Miss Utah Pageant at Capitol Theatre in Salt Lake City.
As contestants work towards their goal of becoming Miss Millard they gain self-confidence and poise in many areas that are applicable as they continue their education, join the workforce, and continue on with their lives. Competition begins with the Judges' Interview, which is 40 percent of the total score. The casual wear portion counts as 10 percent of the score. Contestants perform their talents on the evening of the pageant, which counts as 30 percent. Evening wear is scored at 10 percent of the total score. The remaining 10 percent of contestants' scores is given during two on-stage questions.
Miss Millard receives a $2000.00 scholarship and her attendants and other finalists are also presented scholarships and/or cash prizes. This year’s attendants are Kember Anderson, 1st Attendant, Daughter of Peter and Colleen Anderson, 2nd Attendant is Jamilyn Finlinson, Daughter of Garth and Venice Finlinson.
This year's Little Miss Millard is Brinley Gehre, daughter of Jeff and Bonnie Gehre of Fillmore. She is 9 years old and is a 4th grader at Fillmore Elementary. Brinley serves alongside Tara in representing the county and presiding over many functions. She accompanies Tara to the Miss Utah Pageant and escorts her on stage. Brinley is focusing on implementing the “Buddy Box” created by Marisa Nielsen, Miss Utah’s Outstanding Teen 2010. "Buddy Box" is a box that is an anonymous way for students to get help for their friends without telling an adult or getting directly involved. A custom created "Buddy Box" with a lid and slit in the top is to be placed in the media center or commons areas. Students can write anonymous notes to the school principal or a counselor telling about the problem their friend is dealing with. So far, over 200,000 students have access to the Buddy Box in their school. Through the Buddy Box students have received help with problems that may not have been recognized otherwise. Kennedi Beckstrand, daughter of Jay and Kelli Beckstrand is the 1st Attendant and Dennika Moody, Daughter of Bryce and Ginger Moody, is the 2nd Attendant.
New this year is Miss Millard Outstanding Teen. She is Taylor Carson, Daughter of David and Kathryn Carson, She will compete for the state title in October. Taylor was selected under the same criteria as the Miss Millard and Little Miss.
The Miss Millard Organization is looking to extend a pageant to the girls between the ages of 10-13. Following the same guidelines that has been set forth from the pageants all ready in place.
